HMS Stalker

With Indomitable damaged in July 1943, Bill’s squadron flew from Gibraltar and then from the escort carrier Stalker. In August they drilled with aircraft from four other escort carriers under Admiral Vian.

Operation Avalanche, the Salerno landings, began on 9 September 1943. Bill served as Wing Leader, and the Wing flew ten separate sorties under him before the beachhead was secured on 16 September.
