Airman Drops Into Assault Runs Out of Fuel While Chasing Nazi Junkers Near Naples

WITH THE U.S. ARMY BEFORE SALERNO, Italy, Sept. 9.—(Delayed.)—A Canadian literally dropped from the sky into the middle of the Anglo-American assault against Naples.

He was Sub.-Lt. Lionel Johnson of Vancouver, member of the Royal Navy's fleet air arm.

On dawn patrol with a squadron of naval Seafires which chased a group of Nazi Junkers-88's, Johnson ran short of fuel. His flight control officer ordered him to bail out and Johnson landed five miles off shore. He was later rescued from his dinghy.

Johnson, who is 21, flew a Seafire in the North African and Sicilian campaigns. Another Canadian in this area is Lt.-Cmdr. William Martyn of Toronto who commands a squadron of Seafires operating as part of the umbrella for Allied forces making this bridgehead.

The article is mainly about Sub.-Lt. Lionel Johnson; Martyn is mentioned only in the last paragraph, where the paper prints his home as Toronto. The headline is main head "Airman Drops Into Assault" with a three-line deck "Runs Out of Fuel While Chasing Nazi Junkers Near Naples".
